[40] Welland Tribune, 13 Apr 1894, ” Perry Station: A Runaway Match.” “This usually well conducted and quiet little village (Perry) was disturbed very early on Monday morning by the ravings and threats of an enraged papa. Quite a consternation was caused in the circle of the Dunkards or Tunkers. It appears that Mary Sett, a meek sister, and Henry Climenhage, a stalwart young brother of the above community, had entered into a contract of marriage, but altogether contrary to the wish of Mary’s paternal relation, who with his eldest son, were acting in the capacity of the guardian of Mary (a girl of some three or four summers past her majority), endeavouring to keep her from the clutches of the faithful Henry. But they meant to be married. Henry meant to have Mary, and Mary meant to have Henry, so not withstanding the vigilance exercised by the old gent and his son, Henry and Mary beat them hollow. Henry was brave, although at one time he felt like withdrawing, but finally gathered up his courage enough to go through. He arrived as early as 5 o’clock in the morning at the house of her brother-in-law, where Mary contrived to lodge for a night, and from thence they fled to the parson’s as quickly as possible, where they were united in holy matrimony. About an hour and a half after they were gone, the tempestuous papa arrived. It is reported his rage was such that it could be heard almost a mile away, but storm and rave as he might, it was too late, too late. We wish the newly wedded much happiness and trust the recollection of the event will cause them no sorrow.“
